Chapter One 21
The Lia Fáil at Tara
The Tuatha Dé Danann defeated the Fir Bolg in a great battle fought at Southern Moytura near Cong in present day county Mayo. They next overcame the feared Fomorians at the battle of Northern Moytura, near Kilmactraney, close by Lough Arrow in Sligo, slew their leader, Balor of the Evil Eye, and as a result, retained their mastery of the country for some hundreds of years. Balor who slew Nuadat during the selfsame battle was himself killed by a stone lung from a sling. His wife, Cethlenn/Cehlen seems to have beem worthy of her hus- band. She fought at the second battle and inlicted a wound on a King of the Dé Dannans of which he afterwards died. It is stated in the Annals of the Four Masters that Enniskillen received its name from her: in the Irish authorities it is always called Inis-Cethlenn-‘Cethlenn’s Island.’The Tuatha Dé Danann had some noted chiefs and leaders, many of whose names are still spoken of today, including their irst leader, the aforementioned Nuadh (Nuadat) an Airgead –Lámh, ‘Nuada of the Silver Arm’; Lugh Lámh-Fhada, ‘Lugh of the Long Arm’, and the ancient sun-temple at Newgrange which we referenced earlier, is thought by many to be the work of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
