In 1852 Meagher escaped from Tasmania, led irst to South America before making his way to New York. He went on to become a Brigadier General in the Union Army and a feted civil war hero: known as the father of ‘Irish-Americanism,’ he was chosen to be a pallbearer at the funeral of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
